The Daily Post - Monday, November 27, 1721

The three Men that were saved out of the Royal Anne Galley, viz. Tho Goodall, Wm. James, and Robt. Wilson, are arrived in Town, and on Saturday last were examin'd at the Board of Admiralty: And 'tis said the Lord Belhaven was asleep in his cabin, as were also the said three Sailors and a great many others in their Hammocks when the Ship first struck upon the Rock; but the terrible Shock and the dismal Cry above Deck soon awaken'd them, and running up in their Shirts all Hands were at work to get her off; but the second Shock, which happen'd some Minutes after the first, dash'd her to Pieces:  The three Persons afore-mention'd were saved upon three several Pieces of the Wreck: Robert Wilson had 4 others upon the Plank with him, who were all wash'd off by the Waves, but he fortunately saved himself by swimming to a Rock, where he continued till next Morning. It is believed that about 300 Persons lost their Lives by this unfortunate Accident.

....…..Captain Willis cry'd, 'Brave sailors, do your best, or die we must:
'Lord have mercy! new relieve us! in Thy Providence we trust;
Save us in the time of danger, for death before our eyes appear!'
And when they found all hopes were over, in tears they all fell down to Prayer

Then against the fatal rocks the Royal Galley split in twain,
Two hundred souls aloud were crying, 'Lord, save us from the wat'ry main!'
To see each for his life a-shifting, as the waves tost mountains high,
The Galley in the deep a-sinking, while dying groans did pierce the sky..........
