SS
Ilston
SS Iston was an armed merchantman
of 2,426 tons, 300x44x19ft. She was sunk on 30 June 1917 by torpedo
from a U-boat. This big wreck lies in 45-50m of water two miles
or so east of Lizard point, with the large boilers and cargo of
railway rolling stock showing across the wreckage.

The
site can be difficult to find and is subject to strong tides sweeping
around The Lizard Point. Dive on slack water which isn’t
for very long on spring tides. As on all dives around The Lizard
the visibility is often remarkable here (20-30m), which makes
for a spectacular dive. Clouds of pouting often hover over the
wreck with other fish – look for the monstrous congers hiding
amonst the wreckage by the boilers.
